Veronika Bromberg : An Encaustic Collage Artist

Veronika Bromberg, an artist from New York, spent two weeks this summer at Il Palmerino, devoting her time entirely to her art, escaping the daily routine of life back in New York. She hopes to bring back with her across the Atlantic the ability to slow down, live in the moment, and focus on her art.

Veronika is an encaustic collage artist. She works with rich pigments that are wax-based, melting them to create a luminous, multi-layered surface. The work she created at Il Palmerino served to prepare her for what lies ahead, informing the work she will create in her art studio in Connecticut. At Il Palmerino, she discovered the green bottles located throughout the property, the Tuscan cypress trees, and the iron and metal doors and gates found in the villa’s gardens.

Veronika is an abstract artist who lets the process guide her, drawing inspiration from various artists, such as the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint, as well as the work of Mark Rothko, exhibited here in Florence this summer.

Generally, when Veronika begins a creative project in her studio, she begins with a color palette and considers the combination of colors with abstract forms. As she begins to add layers of collage materials to the color, fusing every added layer is a necessary step. Veronika follows her intuition, letting it guide the artistic process as she considers her preliminary sketches or the works of other artists for inspiration, allowing the process to unfold naturally.

When she arrived at Il Palmerino, it was important for her to take a step back and explore the surroundings so she wouldn’t feel overwhelmed. She then adapted more of an observer’s mindset and used her sketchbook before diving into her work. Her art residency at Il Palmerino not only inspired her but also allowed her to reflect, take a step back from her work, and give herself a moment to think about how her experiences there could help guide her work going forward.
