For the last three weeks, artist Julia Poletti has dedicated her stay at Il Palmerino to drawing and finding inspiration in the rich architecture of Florence. She describes her short stay as pure happiness, allowing her to slow down, reflect, and create artworks that capture the beauty of the Tuscan landscape.
Born in Russia, Julia discovered her love of drawing at a very young age and planned to attend art school. The economic and political climate at the time, however, prompted her parents to guide her towards an education and career in architecture that would last for 20 years. When she arrived in France, she attended workshops at the Beaux-Arts and took classes in painting and drawing, reigniting her passion for illustration. Just five years ago, Julia decided to embark on a new chapter and devote herself to being an artist. Soon after publishing her first illustrated children’s book, she began a collection of works using watercolor and pastels. She has remained connected to her roots in architecture, often using both urban and rural landscapes as subjects.

Julia arrived at Il Palermino with the intent to immerse herself in the architecture of Florence, which she considers “the most beautiful in the world.” She was constantly inspired by the great Renaissance artists and architects and even dedicated one of her pieces to the Santa Maria Novella. Her pastel and watercolor artworks capture the effect of light and shade on Tuscany and the Il Palmerino property.
Julia found the space to step back and experience what she describes as a dream, and we hope to welcome her back again soon.
